The Meibu-kan Crest is to be worn by students who study Meibu-kan Goju-Ryu
Karate-do. Each student should be aware of its deep meaning and
significance.
The crest itself is a combination of two Japanese kanji (characters). The
first meaning sun and the second meaning moon. This meaning in itself is
symbolic of the style's origin. Goju-Ryu means hard/soft style. The techniques
and philosophies of the style revolve around opposites in balance, so the
kanji sun/moon represents this.
The characters also represent Ah and Um. Ah means exhaling, represented by
the kanji for moon. Um means inhaling, represented by the kanji for sun.
Again here are opposing forces working together in harmony. Exhaling/Hard
- Inhaling/Soft.
The kanji also represent Hito-Tsuki. SUN (HI) and (TO) MOON (TSUKI).To a
Karateka, this concept is one of the most important aspects of classical
Karate training. Hito-Tsuki or one punch is a concept that deals with the
student's awareness of every time he/she practices in the dojo, he/she must
give 110%, both physically and mentally and think as if the technique thrown
could possibly be their last if in real combat, so they should always try
their best to throw the best possible technique. The Crest's kanji together
translate into another word, Mei meaning clear, pure, or unquestionable,
or sticking to one's principles. This is found in our dojo's name, Meibu-kan.
Meibu-kan means - house of the pure minded warrior. The Dai Sensei's full
name is Meitoku Yagi. His two sons are Meitatsu Yagi and Meitetsu Yagi.
To the people of the far east, the Meibukan Crest is a positive symbol. When
they see the crest worn by students of Meibukan, the know right away they
are fine people.
